Brian Cunningham is a Democrat representing the 43rd District in Brooklyn, which includes Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Garden. He is a passionate advocate for the working families of Central Brooklyn, fighting for affordable housing, quality education, and economic opportunity for all.
Brian is a first-generation American and the son of Jamaican parents who instilled in him the values of hard work and public service from an early age. He attended New York City public schools and grew up in the community he now represents.
Brian began his career as an advocate counselor for CAMBA, assisting at-risk youth in reaching their academic goals and overcoming barriers. He has served as a senior aide in numerous legislative offices within the New York State Senate and the New York City Council as well as with President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.
Through his personal and professional experiences, Brian has seen firsthand the historic lack of resources District 43 receives and the need for strong leadership to build power in a community that has been left behind by New York’s leaders. This reality has inspired Brian to dedicate his life to public service and give back to the community that raised him.
Brian and his wife, Stephanie, were married on October 11, 2012 at Lenox Road Baptist Church. Stephanie is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Museum Hue. They continue to live in Flatbush together with their new son, Senator, and their dog, Liberty.
Democratic Assemblymember Brian Cunningham represents District 43 in the New York State Assembly. District 43 encompasses the vibrant neighborhoods of Prospect Lefferts Garden, Crown Heights, Wingate, and Flatbush.
